Bridging Western classical & Arabic musical traditions
Internationally acclaimed Egyptian conductor and composer.
Hisham Gabr is one of Egypt's most distinguished musical figures. Guest Conductor at the Cairo Opera House, former Director of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina Arts Centre, and Head of Arabic Programs and Conductor at the Royal Opera House Muscat, he stands at the heart of Arabic classical music on the world stage.
Born in 1972, Gabr studied conducting in Egypt, France and the United States under renowned mentors including Christophe Mueller, Dominique Ruits, Jean-Jacques Werner, Chris Kim and Ahmed El-Saedi. He was awarded the prestigious Fulbright senior grant, completing advanced conducting studies at Cornell University, New York.
Beyond his leadership at Cairo Opera House, Gabr is a returning guest conductor with leading orchestras across Europe, the Middle East and the Americas — championing a repertoire that unites Western classical tradition with the depth of Arabic musical heritage.
Gabr receives frequent commissions to compose music for prestigious Egyptian and international institutions and orchestras — including the Egyptian Ministry of Culture and the Egyptian Ministry of Information, as well as state and private institutions in Bahrain, Oman and Lebanon.
Beyond the podium, Gabr lends his expertise as a jury member for international competitions and theatre festivals — including the Zoraqi Conducting Competition, the Cairo International Festival for Experimental Theatre and the Cairo National Theatre Festival — helping identify and mentor the next generation of maestros and stage artists.
The opera "Sindbad," commissioned by the Royal Opera House Muscat, inaugurated the 2025/2026 Season in Muscat and had its Premiere in Budapest in 2026, with outstanding success.
